Book an introductory program before your visit to the museum. In 30 minutes, one of our educators will take you through the history of Anne Frank in the context of the Second World War and the persecution of the Jews. Through this informative and interactive talk, you will be well prepared for your visit.The program is in English and costs € 7.00 extra. Please note that this program is not suitable for visitors under 10 years old, however this is at visitors own discretion. Actress Hailee Steinfeld, an Academy Award® nominee for the 2010 film True Grit, brings Anne’s words to life through her narration, which is heard throughout the exhibit. Steinfeld’s narration is augmented by numerous displays of artifacts that range from postcards, photos and magazines to games, letters to pen pals, and a reproduction of Anne’s blank diary, a gift on her thirteenth birthday.

The final gallery of the Anne exhibit displays translated versions of the diary from around the world, a testament to the global influence and enduring legacy of Anne Frank. For two years during the Second World War, the Secret Annex served as a hiding place for Anne Frank and the other people there. The Anne Frank House was established in 1957 and its main purpose was to preserve the hiding place. The Missions and Ranchos are a special designation of historic homes that have such a unique position in telling the history of southern California that they deserve a separate page.
The University provided the advance funding and made up the shortage of the Anne Frank House. Frank’s father, German businessman Otto Frank, had taken his family—his wife and two daughters—from Germany to Amsterdam before the outbreak of World War II, to escape Nazi persecution. In 1940 he moved his food products business to 263 Prinsengracht, a canal house that was originally built in 1635. Though the house was emptied by German troops after the raid, an employee, Miep Gies, was able to salvage the vivid diary that the lively teenage Anne had kept. Gies later gave it to Otto, the only one of the group to survive the extermination camps to which they had been sent.

The Anne Frank Foundation was established on 3 May 1957 in cooperation with Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father, with the primary aim of collecting enough funds to purchase and restore the building. In October of that year, the company who owned it donated the building to the foundation as a goodwill gesture. The collected funds were then used to purchase the house next door, Number 265, shortly before the remaining buildings on the block were pulled down as planned.

Shortly after the book was published, visitors were shown around by the employees who had hidden the families and could see the secret rooms. However, by 1955, the company had moved to new premises and the entire block to which the building belonged was sold to a single estate agent who served a demolition order with the intention of building a factory on the space. A campaign to save the building and to list it as a protected monument was started by the Dutch paper Het Vrije Volk on 23 November 1955. The building was saved by campaigners who staged a protest outside the building on the day of demolition.
Anne and Margot died just a few weeks before the camp was liberated by British troops on April 15, 1945. Otto Frank would be the only survivor of the group of eight from the Secret Annex. The Achterhuis (Dutch for "back house") or Secret Annex – as it was called in The Diary of a Young Girl, an English translation of the diary – is the rear extension of the building. It was concealed from view by houses on all four sides of a quadrangle. Its secluded position made it an ideal hiding place for Otto Frank, his wife Edith, two daughters, Margot and Anne, of whom Anne was the younger, and four other Jews seeking refuge from Nazi persecution.
In 2022, inspired by Anne Frank’s story, 10 year old Olivia Prince, with the support of Anne Frank LA, approached Councilmember Paul Koretz (CD5) about declaring an official day to honor Anne’s legacy. Our programs enable learners of all ages to better understand the dangers of prejudice and discrimination, the importance of democracy, and how to become upstanders rather than bystanders.
