Though I am saying goodbye to Winthrop as a student, I’m incredibly lucky in that I will be returning to the House next year as a Faculty Dean Aide. I will get the opportunity to work with House staff to bring together the Winthrop community, and make this house a home for others as it has been for me. Luckily, as was the case with all Harvard Houses, Winthrop went the distance when it came to fostering virtual community.

Our house becomes a home when there’s happiness to share. No matter the living condition, the size or what our houses are made of, we each have the opportunity to make our house a home. Email notifications are only sent once a day, and only if there are new matching items.
The smells of their cooking or spices in the cupboards; marks on floors and walls from their dogs, their kids or moving furniture; and their choices in paint color. Moving into a new home, especially one where the past owners lived for many years, can almost feel as if you are invading someone else’s personal space. Sometimes it’s helpful to actually be able to see the faces of those you love on the walls, taped to the fridge, cluttering your nightstand. Photos of places you’ve been, adventures you’ve been on, the things and experiences you love can have a positive effect too. Put them up where you can see them, because there is great comfort in our personal histories. My challenge for you today and this upcoming month is to make your house a home.

No matter how big or small our houses are…Whether you can vacuum your whole house with one electric socket or you have to unplug it 10 times, we can make them become HOMES. It doesn’t have to look good – it just has to feel good. My first as a student in Winthrop House was incredible.

I made countless memories in the dining hall, in Beren 202, and in the Rooftop Common Room. As so many of my favorite moments happened in the Winthrop halls, I found myself thinking of Winthrop not just as a house, but as a home. Winthrop is where I went to rest, to eat, to socialize.
When it came time to give my toast to my adopted blockmates during Winthrop Senior Dinner, it was one of the most bittersweet goodbyes I’ve said yet. A home in Nebraska feels very different than one in Southern California, Connecticut or Texas. Even if homes in different regions are similar in style, the sense of a place seeps in. The history of a place, the personality of a region , and how you feel about living there will affect how you feel about your home. If you are feeling disconnected from your home, consider taking time to explore your area and seek out good things and hidden treasures.
I have some friends who waited over five years to hang anything on the walls because they wanted to paint first, but never got around to it! Renters may be reluctant to make holes in the walls, but small holes are easily patched and covered, so please don’t let that stop you. Putting your art, photos and objects on the walls is one of the quickest ways to make a house feel like a home. It’s a step that, while in reality is easily changed, feels quite permanent.
One of the best parts of student life at Harvard is the residential community and the experience of living on campus. First-year students live in or near Harvard Yard, and upperclassman students live in one of the twelve Houses. Most foreign residents can apply for apermanent residence permit in Germany— a ”settlement permit“ — after five years. For example, if you are a non-EU national married to a German citizen, you could file your application for a settlement permit after three years. It’s funny; people have all kinds of reasons for not putting things on the walls.
